2009年康城評審團大獎。

擁有阿拉伯和血統的馬力（Tahar Rahim 飾）被判有罪入獄6年，由於他既不能讀也不會寫，所以幾乎完全是以一種孤獨的狀態出現在監獄裡，而且他也比其他罪犯看起來更稚嫩也更加脆弱，畢竟，他才19歲而已。

雖然是監獄，但這裡就好像是一個小社會，而統領著犯人的則是來自於一個科西嘉人集團的首領凱撒（Niels Arestrup 飾），他把看起來很好欺負的馬力逼至一種無路可退的絕境，迫使著他不得不完成被強行安排到他身上的“任務”，同時也讓“好學”的馬力在這個過程中慢慢變得強壯起來……最終，他贏得了凱撒的信任，成了其左右手。馬力是一個一點就明的聰明人，更懂得學以致用。他漸漸發展起自己的毒品交易網絡，在黑手黨的支持和一位有影響力的穆斯林長老的保護下，馬力逐漸成為黑手黨的頭目。
